Un Fried Green Tomatoes

I came home from my fantastic weekend alone to a clean house and 100 pounds of green tomatoes. Apparently the family helped some friends tear down the green house and thought I wanted ALL the green tomatoes. Now we do have a freezer full of red salmon just begging for green tomato relish so there goes a gallon of them. Plus fried green tomatoes but as for the rest I'm researching. I've ruled out green tomato marmalade because it was gaggy gross last year so if you have any non-sweet green tomato recipes I should try let me know. I know I won't be able to use all of them but I'd hate to give my chickens so many tomatoes when I could be eating them.

Every single year I make fried green tomatoes and every year they are greasy and gross. This year I think I actually hit on something quite tasty. Plus it was a great way to make a pan full with out some getting cold or over cooked being kept warm. I oven fried them. It was so simple and they came out fantastic. I made them exactly the same as always except instead of frying them I baked them on my silpat mat on a baking sheet in a 375˚ oven or about 20-25 minutes. The outside was crispy while the inside still had some firmness but was quite easy to cute and eat. I lived them but my boys? Not so much! Oh well at least they tried them.

Un Fried Green Tomatoes

**the amounts will vary depending upon the size of green tomatoes you are using so be ready to use more of any of the breading**

2-3 firm green tomatoes
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup of flour
2 eggs
1/2 sleeve of saltines, crushed
drizzle of olive oil
salt and pepper to taste

pre-heat oven to 375˚
slice the green tomatoes in 1/4 inch slices, set aside top and bottom slices
arrange 4 bowls in a line
bowl #1 the milk
bowl #2 the flour
bowl #3 the eggs, beat them
bowl #4 the cracker crumbs
put your silpat in the baking sheet at the end of the line
start dredging your tomatoes, just go right on down the line and lay it on the silpat
once all the tomatoes are done drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper
bake for at l5 minutes or until the bottoms are browning
turn and bake for at least another 10 minutes or until they brown up

These were so good, truly the best I have ever made. I think I'm going to hot sauce in the milk or eggs next time to add some zip.

What do you do with green tomatoes? I need some great suggestions. A real plus would be things I could can for use later in the winter.

BlogHer Food 09

Here's the thing about conferences; I'm not really sure of the point. This one was no exception. I think the point was to make me a better blogger. Or maybe it was to network and meet all kinds of great people who will then read my blog and I'll read theirs and we'll live a little through each others blogs. Or maybe the point is to escape the normal work-a-day life and have a kick ass time eating drinking and collecting sweet swag. IF the point of a conference are ANY/ALL of those 3 options then by all means BlogHer food 09 was a rip roaring success.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself. How could I not? I was in a beautiful city hanging with my peeps. People who talk passionately about food, A LOT. I was anxious about this event because I was basically going in knowing one person. But I met 2 more before the conference and they were so wonderful they completely set me at ease. Thanks Heather for going to the SF MoMA with me. Thanks Susan for dragging me all over Chinatown or was it the other way around? I don't know and I don't care! These 2 wonderful women made me feel funny, hip, knowledgeable and secure. I needed that to get me TO the conference.

I'm shy. Did you know that? I get terrible nerves and decide I am not worthy and try to skip out on stuff. I couldn't talk on the phone until I was 8. Scared the daylights out of me.

I went early to register and of course you read the fiasco with my name tag so I was pretty much petrified. Then I met my friend Janet(pretty green girl) who is a blog buddy. She set me right at ease and boom shyness gone. From there on out I was cool with networking, handing out my card and giving my blog lowdown. We breakfasted and were joined by Heather. Another lady asked to join us and pretty soon our table was almost full. I was talking Alaska when one of the ladies asked if I new a blogger named Christo. When I said yes it was a hilarious moment realizing that he had told her to look out for me and we found each other boom right away. Diva on a Diet is her name and she writes Beach Eats, great blog and blogger!

Off to session one. I chose the values track which was on the politics of food and food blogs. Interesting track and lots of good things were said. Greg Massa, a local organic brown rice farmer, was on the panel and he had a lot to say about blogging and spreading the word about his rice via blogs and social media. I will be including links to transcripts if I can find them.

Lunch. Oy. So much has been said about the LUNCH FAIL. I feel I need to add my 2 cents here. Lunch was a fail because many of the sponsors for this event were promoting pre-made food. Food bloggers make their own food and we rarely use frozen pasta dishes. I do not want to bite the hand that feeds me but I think the sponsorship was all wrong. There were no high end products, no local, no organic, no real food products. Not that we don't occasionally eat frozen pasta or healthy choice entrees but they were completely wrong for a foodie event. Period. I think it was the big fail on the part of BlogHer rather than Bertolli who many are blaming. Why were there hardly any real foods included? Was it a lack of ability to see who the main focus was? They should have had a foodie advisory panel that gave them a little direction. All that being said; we got wine with lunch so who gives a rip?!? No seriously I think this was the first year and if I know one thing about the BlogHer ladies they learn from their mistakes and this will only happen once. And really the pasta dishes? Edible. For a food conference? No. The fact that they were served up while listening to Rocco Dispirto flirting with the ladies made them a little better.

Christina? The Pioneer Woman slipped in late and sat at our table for dessert. She was very sweet and shy. I liked her but the girl next to us almost wet her pants in excitement. Scary.

The second panel I skipped because it was so full. Yikes no sitting on the floor for me! The other choices were not interesting so I drug my huge bag of swag home to the hotel and because the day was 90˚ out I changed my shirt and pulled my hair up. Ahh better.

The third session was about finding your voice. It talked a lot about kind of setting the tone and staying the course. Staying true to yourself. But also about how your blog should change and grow with you. It to was very interesting.

After this session we received a Scharffen Berger Chocolate gift bag. YUM! We watched an unfortunate dessert idea where people scooped chocolate and toppings out a huge chocolate box with a gloved hand. Um no eating chocolate from an exam glove is not pretty nor does it inspire the desire to eat. I overcame that though to try some of the Mushroom Council's Portabellas Stuffed with Sprouted Quinoa. Yum although it needed a bit of salt. I'll live.

The rest of the evening was pretty much spent in a chocolate induced coma while I watched David Lebovitz, The Pioneer Woman and Simply Recipes answer questions on stage. An odd way to end if you ask me.

Then I spent the rest of the time in a pink champagne induced haze at the cocktail party where I'm pretty sure I spit on several people (accidentally). I hung with Heather, Janet and Diva on a Diet and Jeremy(who fit in how? I'm not quite sure) We snickered at some of the annoying attendees (we are perfect!) and noshed on yummy eats. And more drinks. Repeat.

Then at 7:40 I marched everyone I could round up right over to the after party ( I knew where it was and no one else did another case where amazing anal retentiveness is awesome!)where the real fun began with free flowing margaritas, chocolates, White Russians, taco bars and ceviche. Whoa. I didn't eat out of 'the fear' of well never mind. So I drank more. And more because screw it I have to leave in the morning. I remember dancing to brick house and trying to smoke a cigarette(what??). Then we poured out into the night collected our swag bags (2 more!!) and stumbled off to collect Pretty Green Girl's bags at the ST. Regis where I was bowed to like royalty by the whoever collected our bags.

Gah I figured it was about 3 in the morning uh yeah damn I'm old it was only 9:30 at night. After that I staggered off to buy a new suitcase to put my clothes in so I could use the other to pack ALL THE AWESOME GOODIES IN. Thankfully I fit everything in except 2 cans of soup and a truffle I bought. It was a feat of engineering and packing marvel.

I took only about 3 pictures the whole conference I was too busy networking, eating or drinking. All good to do when all else fails and the shy in me wants to jump out.

Must sleep, I'm almost recovered.

The Queen of All

My name tag badge thingy for BlogHer Food read
Laura Queen of All
Hey Whats for Dinner Mom?
www.heywhatsfordinnermom.blogspot.com

I got a lot of strange looks. I did not register as the Queen of All, they asked for a nickname I jokingly filled in a snark nickname my friend Deborah gave me "The Queen of All That is Good".
But they couldn't fit it all on my tag therefore I have become the Queen of All. Which is how it really should be, right? It got a lot of double takes. Especially seeing how I was wearing insane humid hair at the time. But what can you do? The only time it bothered me was when they couldn't find my name tag and I thought they didn't have me registered. Um no. They had me filed under Laura Queen of All. And then when they were looking madly for my name tag I finally embarrassingly admitted that I MAY have used a silly nickname on my registration. Problem solved.

But lets back up to the day BEFORE I became the Queen of All. Friday. Ahhhhh Friday was an absolutely lovely day full of promise! I was checking on twitter when a fellow blogger tweeted that she didn't know what to do or how to get around in San Francisco. I tweeted her and offered to get her to Chinatown if she was interested. She jumped at the chance and then of course I got the fear of shy. But I didn't need to worry Susan turned out to absolutely wonderful. We hit it right off and I felt like I had known her forever. We headed deep into Chinatown after riding the cable cars. We pretty much shopped and ate our way through Chinatown. We ate Dim Sum at a place we both agreed that we would never have ventured into alone, we drank bubble tea (mmmmmm) and stood in line for custard tarts (the best in Chinatown) for over an hour with an angry Chinese mob. Seriously the line was so long they actually had those rope dividers that banks use set up on the sidewalk and a line bouncer to keep people from cutting in. No such luck on that one though because special customers seemed to waltz right in while us low lifers stood around. Once inside I bought 4 tarts(for one person?) and a dozen macaroons. Were the tarts good? Ummm I accidentally left them out of the fridge and then was a bit too freaked to eat them. Susan said however that they were in fact delicious.

I don't know what this is, anybody??

After that I hit Sephora while Susan drug her tired self back to her hotel. I did not spend entirely too much money at Sephora. No really I bought some Bare Minerals Mascara and Skin Revver Upper. Too many stompy fashionistas dressed in black for this granola hippie girl. Then I drug my sorry tired self back to the hotel.

I needed to get ready for the first of some free eats! A dinner put on by the Mushroom Council at the ultra swanky RN74 , a Michael Minna restaurant. After trying on and discarding every single item of clothing I had with me I was stumped on what to wear. I can't wear anything but hiking shoes so my choices are limited or I am in pain. So I went kind of urban granola chic. I wore jeans with cuffs turned up all the way to my knees, hiking shoes, black top and sweater cardigan. Yes I got slightly lost and over shot the f-line stop but I soon figured it out with a little help from a fellow lost blogger, Alanna. I was swigging free Pinot Noir and chowing down on some of the tastiest mushrooms I ever sunk my teeth into before I had time to even worry too much about being lost in the dark, alone on the streets of San Francisco.

I have missed being home. A bit. It's damn cold here. And it's in times like these I ask myself why do I live here? Today I could find no good answer in words.

Peace and Love,

I'm Back Now What?

It's hard to come back from an event like BlogHer Food 09 and not be completely inspired to be a better blogger.( And lose some damn weight) I met so many great women who I felt like I knew for a 20 years after minutes of visiting together. I think it's because we are all passionate about food and blogging that we all seemed to click so well. I loved hearing whats important to other people because sometimes I get so focused on what I write about that I block everything else.

I also have a very long list of yard work, garden work, house work and bird work staring me down. I don't know what the hell is wrong with me but suddenly I realized that snow could be here in as little as 2 weeks and I have done NOTHING to prepare.

I am working on a BlogHer 09 post which I am hoping to have ready to put up tonight(WITHOUT incriminating photos!) but right now I have 2 hooligan boys to feed, a dog giving me the feed me death stare with proper accompanying drool and birds who still need to be fed. Geesh my live revolves around food.

San Francisco Day 1

I love San Francisco food! So many choices. Lunch was Henry's Hunan. Mmmm I love their Dry Sauteed Green Beans with Tofu and Diana's Special Meat Pie. I lunched early to avoid the crowds and was thankful because when I left the line was out the door.

I spent the day being a tourist. I stalked the SF MoMA only to see that tonight was half price which made evening plans really easy. I made plans with a fellow food blogger to meet up at 6 for a museum visit.

I walked up to the cable cars.

Rode them to Fisherman's Wharf.

Cruised around down there for a few hours. Enjoyed myself. Tons of food, everywhere.

Rode the F-line vintage streetcar back to my hotel.

Went to the SF MoMA for a couple hours with Heather a fellow blogger. We had a blast but the real fun was deciding what to eat for dinner. Hey 2 foodies in a city of food what do you expect? We headed for the Castro for Hot Cookie and their anatomically enhanced, ahem, cookies. Hee! These were a special request for a few friends in Alaska and once in the Castro we decided to try a highly recommended Thai place across the street. It was supposed to be romantic. I don't know about that but the food was good and we a grand view of the Castro Theater. We rode the F-line back down market where I promptly collapsed in bed. And blogged.

Tomorrow? Foodbuzz open house, free food people! Chinatown. Coit Tower, maybe. David Lebovitz book signing, maybe. Mushroom Council dinner in the evening at RN74, free food people!

Peace and Love,

Check out these great photos of flying out of Alaska.

Sorry for the lapse

By the time many of you read this I will be sky high on my way to BlogHer Food '09. I'm nervous and excited. I haven't been alone in a big city by myself for 22 years. I have never left my entire family to fend for themselves, selected parts but not all of them at once. I have not done anything for me or about me in so long I feel guilty for it. A little. My husband says I'll miss my kids. I say I won't. I will, of course, but I crave this break.

I'm tired. Summer is long and the work is hard. A lot of this past summer was just plain painful, ankle and foot wise. I'm ready for winter, sleeping in darkness and playing scrabble. Skiing in the bitter cold. The challenge of life up here in the winter. Soon I'll be ready for spring but right now i am ready for a break from my life and summer, birds and crops and shriek-y kids. I need to be alone for a while.

I'm also nervous because I only know one person at this conference. ONE. Who will I chat with? Will they like me? What about my fat ass? That zit on my forehead? My blog? Will I feel like a freak outsider? **sigh** Well I guess I can always skip out and enjoy San Francisco for another day right?

No?

Damn!

On with the Best Foodie Foto contest! The winner? VeggieGirl with her photo of a beautiful smoothie from One Lucky Duck!

I'm announcing now that there will be no Best Foodie Foto contest this weekend because of my much needed sanity break. It will return in 2 the following weekend and I would love anyone and everyone to participate. I would also love to have everyone give it a shout out next week so we can keep it going! Thanks-

But Laura have you been cooking? Yes. Is it post worthy? No. Why? I am simply overwhelmed at the moment and needed to take care of some pre-trip stuff so our meals have been low key pancakes or baked pork chops. I'll be a whole new me when I get back.

I will be posting photos while I'm gone. And blogging as best I can, probably mostly photos though! The food, celebrity chefs, food and the after party and food (did I say that already?)will definitely be in there.

Peace and Love

Best Foodie Fotos vote now!

Long week up here without my husband but I really enjoyed myself. I have been busy blanching, freezing, drying and trying to keep my head above water with kids, birds, school and somehow I am supposed to keep the house clean too.

As many of you know I am heading off to BlogHer Food '09 this next week so I am pretty sure the contest will be non-existent next week. In 2 weeks it will be back in full force and hopefully lots of entries and more great prizes! I want to thank you guys, my loyal readers, for a couple of paypal donations I got to help offset the cost of my trip to BlogHer Food. I didn't end up with any major brand name sponsors so any little bit helps us out tremendously with the major out of pocket expense the conference was. Thanks!

On to the entries!

First up we have last weeks winner, VeggieGirl with a Blue Sunset Shake from One Lucky Duck in NYC

#2 is from Christina of Dinner at Christina's from her post Sweet Potato Fries, behold the sweet potato!

#3 is from that same post of Christina's The sweet potato fries post baking!

#4 is from Sweetie Pie at Just Sweet Enough, Great Grandma Clements Easy Apple Pie

#5 comes from Sweetie Pie also, Scones from her post New Tricks

So what do you think? Who is going to walk away with the Chavrie and Alouette Cheese? Well leave a comment and let the world know which blogger has the Best Foodie Foto.

Peace and Love,
