Depressed or Dehydrated?

Headache or dehydrated?

Tired or dehydrated?

Sore muscles or dehydrated?

Minor confusion or dehydrated?

Bad mood or dehydrated?

Those are all signs of dehydration. When I fist started looking at this topic I had no clue I would find any of those symptoms. I thought dehydration meant I was thirsty, not cranky, or sore or tired for no reason. I was completely surprised at all those signs and a little ashamed to admit I suffer from all of those symptoms. And I drink only water, uh well after my morning coffee that is, no juice, soda or energy drinks. Even worse I discovered that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, I'm not alone but I don't even want to be in this group.

I've come to the conclusion that many times I think I'm sick and I'm not, I'm dehydrated. And I drink a good amount of water everyday but I'm thinking it's not enough. How much is enough? One site mentioned drink enough to have a full bladder every 4-5 hours but I've had a couple of kids so just LOOKING at water sets me off. Another site recommended between 2.2 and 3 liters of water daily. And yet another stated 8x8 ounces of fluid a day, not water but fluid, that seems a dangerous statement because you can get that in 3 venti coffees and yet drink no real water. I found this great water calculator on about.com and it figured I need to drink about 3 liters a day. So for me in Alaska that's what I'm going to do.

If one in 75% of us are dehydrated  and One in 20 Americans are depressed what are the chances that there is some over lap there? What is that doing to the mental state of our country? Our kids in school? Our employees? Our truck drivers. This has to have a direct correlation on the health and well being of our country as a whole. No?

And what about our insurance rates? Our doctors bills? Our pharmaceuticals? The soda industry? These all BENEFIT from us being dry and parched. Hello??

If you smoke, drink coffee, breath, sweat, drink alcohol, exercise, pee or uhhhem the other, you need to replace that water that's being used. If you suffer depression, aches and pains, minor confusion, bad moods or headaches akin to migraines or hangovers chances are you are dehydrated. Drink water for your health and for the health and well being of those who must live with you.

  1. My oldest daughter discovered dehydration while at college in Wyoming. I drink several cups of very weak tea per day, and at least 3 quarts of water per day. And I never stray far from my bathroom, either. Kids do that to you, like you said.

  2. I do so much better when I drink lots of water! sometimes when I think I am hungry it turns out I am really thirsty! Great post!

  4. I'm not a coffee drinker so unless my lazy ass brews some tea for iced tea I drink water. I know that there are days that I'm really good about it, I always have a glass nearby at home and a refillable water (my favorite is the Nature's Path one I won from you!) on the go and at work. But there ARE days where those don't get refilled like they should and I go a few hours without any.

    I do notice it affects me right away. The first thing I notice is a bad taste in my mouth, which I suspect translates to bad breath - ew. And I get groggy and headachy. If I am misbehaving and have a few days where I drink soda or juices and barely any water my SKIN is bad. Dry, chapped hands, chapped lips, I feel like I need eye drops.

    Could all just be mental, but whatever -- mental health is good too right?? I love my water!

  5. I'm anemic and have low blood volume because of it. I'm constantly dehydrated because of it. It's so bad that my fingers look shriveled most of the time. Headaches, depression, confusion- all yes, but they are also symptoms of anemia. The turning point for me was having the veins in my arms bulge out one night. So, I'm trying to drink my water, but it is really hard when it is so out of habit. Good for you for getting the word out. It seems like most of the info for dehydration is for the real life-threatening kind and the other symptoms don't get much press.
